Things to Do in Monteverde

Ziplines, guided cloud forest walks, night hikes and a coffee and chocolate farm — what to do in Monteverde and how to combine it with Arenal.

3 min read

Monteverde is Costa Rica's legendary cloud forest — a highland destination defined by mist, biodiversity, cool temperatures and a strong local commitment to conservation. It is also, for most visitors, the counterpart to Arenal: the two are the most common pairing in a Costa Rica itinerary.

The catalogue here is smaller than Arenal's, and honestly so. Monteverde is a place where the forest itself is the attraction, and most of what there is to do is a different way of moving through it.

From above: the canopy

Monteverde is where Costa Rica's zipline reputation was built. The main circuit runs 9 regular ziplines plus 2 Superman-style cables — one of them the longest zipline in Costa Rica — along with a mega Tarzan swing, a rappel, and a hammock bridge high above the canopy. About two hours, with departures at 7:00 am, 10:00 am and 1:00 pm.

A longer combination pairs a zipline circuit with a visit to the Santa Elena Reserve, allowing about two hours for each activity and departing 7:15 am.

From the ground: the guided walk

A guided hike through Santa Elena's well-maintained trails is the slower counterpart, and the one where the biodiversity actually reveals itself. With an expert guide you can spot howler monkeys, coatimundis, and a variety of birds including the elusive resplendent quetzal.

"Elusive" is the operative word. Cloud forest species are exceptionally well camouflaged, and this is the one destination where going without a guide meaningfully reduces what you will see. Walks run at 6:30, 8:30 and 10:30 am, and 12:30 pm — the early departures are the better bet for birds.

After dark

Monteverde has its own night walk, and it is a genuinely different experience from the daytime forest. As the sun sets the cloud forest comes alive with a completely different energy, and an expert naturalist guide leads you along the trails to find nocturnal wildlife. It starts at 5:30 pm and takes about two hours.

Coffee, chocolate and the working landscape

Not everything here happens in the forest. A farm visit covers how three iconic Costa Rican products are made, following coffee from the growing beans through to the final brew, and exploring the history and hands-on production of chocolate — including tasting cacao fruit and helping make it.

It runs about 2.5 hours and has by far the most flexible schedule in Monteverde, with departures from 7:30 am through 2:30 pm. It is also the one activity here that is entirely weather-proof, which matters more in a cloud forest than most places.

Getting there, and combining it with Arenal

Monteverde is about 3 to 4 hours from San José, on mountain roads that are the main reason people arrive by private transfer rather than driving themselves.

If you are combining it with Arenal — and most people do — the two connect via the jeep-boat-jeep route: a vehicle to Lake Arenal, a boat across, and a second vehicle up the mountain.

How long to stay

Two full days covers Monteverde properly: one for the canopy, and one on the trails with a guide — which is the day most people remember. Add the night walk to either evening.

Since the recommended minimum is three nights in a major destination and arriving here genuinely takes a chunk of a day, that works out neatly.
