The hardest part of planning a Costa Rica trip is not choosing destinations. It is deciding how many to attempt.
The country packs volcanoes, cloud forest, both coasts and a boat-access national park into a small area — and the temptation is to try for all of it. The travel times are what stop you.
Why three nights is the minimum
The standard recommendation is 7 to 10 days for the highlights, with a minimum of three nights in each major destination.
That minimum is not about having enough to do. It is about travel time. Destinations are separated by three- to four-hour drives, sometimes on mountain roads, occasionally involving a boat. A two-night stay means one full day on the ground, with arrival and departure eating the rest.

What the patterns tell you
Arenal anchors almost everything. It appears in every single structure, and never gets fewer than three nights. In the most popular one it gets five. There is simply more to do there than anywhere else in the country — the activity catalogue is several times the size of any other destination's.
Monteverde is the flexible one. In most structures it takes two nights, expanding to three when the itinerary has room. It has a more focused set of activities and sits conveniently between Arenal and the coast, which makes it the natural leg to adjust.
The beach always gets three or more. Beach time is the part of the trip that does not reward being rushed, and it is consistently the most generous leg — whether that is Tamarindo, Papagayo, Manuel Antonio or one of the southern options.
Five, seven or ten days?
Five nights buys you two destinations — either the volcano-and-cloud-forest pairing, or a volcano-and-Tortuguero combination that reaches somewhere genuinely hard to get to.
Six to seven nights is where two destinations become comfortable, or three become possible.
Eight or more is where you can add a third without compressing anything, or give Arenal the five nights its activity list justifies.
Below five nights, the honest advice is to pick one destination and stay there. Two destinations in four nights means most of your trip is the drive between them.
